Gang members and anger management On occasion I will
receive an
anger
management client who is entrenched in the gang culture.
Many of these clients have been referred due to a violent
confrontation, illegal discharge of a firearm or a terrorist
threat.
The presence of anger is evident in many of the younger gang
members. They are angry at absent fathers and drug addicted
mothers. Many are angered by the fact that they can't read and
how the system has failed them. They are angry at rival gangs
and fueled by the rage of revenge.
As gang members mature their anger becomes less visible. They
become more calculated and resolute. The elder gang member is no
longer driven by rage. If he or she lives past the age of 25
they are considered O.G.'s. They call the shots, they run the
game. Violence and aggression is now motivated by pride,
prestige and money. These are the clients who are hard to reach.
Their anger is buried under a life of death, the sound of
sirens, the smell of marijuana and the glory of money.
