"Thirteen" Movie Mimics Real Life
Thirteen
The movie
"Thirteen"
was recently released on video and
DVD. Thirteen tells the story of a thirteen-year-old Los
Angeles Honor student whose life transforms from innocence
to a life of the streets,
drugs,
sex and desperation. Her
change is motivated by the need to fit in. Like many real
life parents, the young ladies mother could not see the
gradual moral decline in her daughter. The tongue rings, the
tattoos, the tight clothes were considered as her daughter's
new way of expressing herself. In fact these "fads" are a
way young people identify with a particular lifestyle and it
is a lifestyle often unfamiliar to their parents. Many of
our youth are living a double life. On Sunday mornings they
sit with blank stares waiting for service to end and their
real life to begin. This life is often a life of late night
illicit phone conversations and Internet chat rooms. It's a
life of social drinking, drugs and ditching parties only to
arrive again on Sunday with their Bibles, pretty Easter
dresses and suits. As a therapist and a member of law
enforcement
I have seen many young people from God fearing
homes slip into a hidden life of deception and depravity.
These youth do not slip without warning signs. The following
are signals you should look for if you believe your child is
in trouble: a drop in grades, concerns of teachers and other
adult figures, a change in friends, and isolation from
family. As a parent it is our job to stand on the wall and
watch for the enemies of our children. What kind of music is
your child listening to? What are their
Internet habits?
What kind of friends do they have? As parents we can no
longer turn away out of fear. Trust your instincts and
confront issues in love.
